Ginkgo Biloba: What the Research Actually Found

2026-04-08 · VapoCept® Editorial Team

Ginkgo biloba has more cognitive research behind it than almost any other botanical, and the research says something more specific and more modest than either its promoters or its critics usually allow.

The Trial Worth Knowing

Published in Phytomedicine in 2011. 188 healthy adults aged 45 to 56 took 240 mg of a standardized Ginkgo extract daily for six weeks, against placebo. The outcome measured was free recall of appointments — a deliberately ordinary task rather than an abstract laboratory score.

That last line matters. The benefit was narrow — helping with generating a memory unaided, not with recognizing something once prompted. A page citing this study without mentioning the null result is quoting selectively. PubMed 21802920

What the Large Trials Did Not Show

Ginkgo has also been tested at scale as a dementia prevention agent in multi-year trials enrolling thousands of older adults. Those studies did not demonstrate that Ginkgo prevents dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

Both things are true at once. Modest, measurable support for specific everyday recall in healthy middle-aged adults over six weeks. No evidence of disease prevention over several years. Anyone citing one of those results while omitting the other is making an argument rather than describing the literature.

Why the Extract Matters More Than the Herb

The research is conducted on standardized extracts — preparations manufactured to a consistent concentration of the compounds thought to be active. Ginkgo leaf powder is not the same product, and a label that simply says "Ginkgo Biloba" with no standardization is not the thing that was tested.

Who Should Be Careful

This is the part that deserves emphasis on a page aimed at readers over fifty, because this is the age at which prescriptions accumulate.

None of this makes Ginkgo dangerous. It makes it an active substance, which is the same reason it is worth taking at all. The conversation is two minutes long and worth having.

A Reasonable Summary

Ginkgo biloba extract is among the better-researched botanical ingredients for everyday memory support in healthy adults, with evidence that is real, specific and limited. It is not a treatment, not a preventive, and not a reason to skip the appointment if something has genuinely changed.
